CERVICAL DISCHARGE

Yep, discharge. Vaginal discharge is NORMAL, and is one of the most reliable signals of the status of your overall pelvic health and fertility. Think of discharge as being as necessary to the vagina as saliva is to your mouth. ⁣[SWIPE]⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
In general, odorless discharge in any variation of white means that things are just fine. The type of discharge is fairly predictable depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
NOTE:

(1) Folks on hormonal birth control may notice different variations in discharge, or none at all. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
(2) Pregnant people usually notice a steady stream of heavier discharge due to increased hormone levels. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
(3) If going commando is more your style, you can take note of any discharge present on the tissue used to wipe after you urinate.⁣

SEX EDUCATION
Screen Shot 2020-04-12 at 11.03.48 PM.png

Growing up in Georgia, comprehensive sex education was virtually nonexistent in schools, but surprisingly, we did have a couple days of science-based sex education (with some conservative, Bible belt undertones, of course) when I was in middle school. We took a field trip to the Fernbank Science Center (I still love that place!), separated by sex, and learned about puberty, fallopian tubes, zygotes, and periods.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I’ll be honest though, the bulk of what I learned about sex came from sneaking and watching porn during my adolescent years. ⁣⁣It wasn’t until fairly recently that I realized just how much those white male dominated narratives presented themselves in my own perceptions of what it meant to give, receive, and experience pleasure. Not to mention the lessons that I accepted around “ideal” body shape, size, and even body hair! The lies of capitalism and patriarchy can be pervasive AF, y’all.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
I digress.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
I’m grateful for spaces (and partners!) that have allowed me to explore, learn, challenge, and re-write narratives about sex, bodies, and pleasure. Please allow this to be that space for you.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Where did you first learn about sex? Did you have sex education in school? Did you learn about pleasure from that same source? I’d love to hear your experiences below!⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

CASTOR OIL FOR PMS RELIEF
Screen Shot 2020-04-13 at 1.40.03 AM.png

I typically have moderate pain during my periods, but for the last few months I’ve had intense cramps and back pain (largely due to change of environment, change of diet, and my struggle to manage my stress during the transition of moving back to the states). Because of this, I have been exploring more natural ways to manage my pain before I reach for the ibuprofen (or wine). ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Enter castor oil packs! Not only are they super relaxing, castor oil is an anti-infammatory that helps to detoxify the liver and support uterine + ovarian health by improving circulation. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Castor oils packs can be used preventatively during your luteal phase (from end of ovulation until period begins) in the days leading up to your period. You can also use them during your period as a pain treatment. If you are preparing for conception, it may be best not to use castor oil packs during ovulation or on your period, follicular and luteal phases are going to be your jam. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
The idea is to keep castor oil on a piece of cloth on the skin for at least an hour with a heat source (while you journal, mediate, drink tea, watch Netflix, talk to your bestie—it’s your world). ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
To make a castor oil pack, you’ll need a hot water bottle or pack, castor oil (organic is best), flannel cloths, and a spare towel. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
—Apply castor oil to one side of a piece of flannel or cloth, so it’s saturated, but not dripping. ⁣⁣⁣
—Place saturated side of cloth on your lower abdomen⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
—Take a large cloth or towel and cover soaked flannel. It is best to have a towel underneath you to catch any leaks (castor oils stains, so make sure this is material that you don’t mind getting dirty). ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
—Apply the hot water bottle or electric heating pad on top⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
—Relax with feet elevated⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Castor oil packs can be beneficial to those experiencing uterine fibroids, cysts, PCOS, or endometriosis. 📷: @fertilealchemy ⁣

FIBROIDS
Screen Shot 2020-04-12 at 11.22.40 PM.png

FIBROIDS 〰️ before I began Flora & Fauna, i had heard statistics about fibroids and i vaguely remember seeing @cynthiabailey10’s journey with fibroids on RHOA. since i have began creating spaces to talk about our bodies, there have been countless women who have called, texted, DM’d me about how fibroids have impacted their lives: severely heavy and painful periods, swollen abdomens, extreme fatigue, low iron levels, blood transfusions, hysterectomies, fertility challenges. it’s crazy how many of us suffer in silence. WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT FIBROIDS MORE! research says that 89-90% of all black women will have 1 fibroid by the age of 50. our silence is our own enemy. it leads us to suffer alone and without vital information. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣
#fibroids are abnormal, non cancerous tissue growths in or on the uterus. they can be a small as a pea or grow to the size of a grapefruit, thus enhancing the #fupa (and cuing insensitive and unsolicited remarks such as “are you pregnant?”—gtfoh). sometimes the symptoms aren’t extreme and a person may not notice them until they are trying to conceive. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
being informed about our bodies allows us to be proactive about our health + our healing. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
love to @roscoespears for sharing her journey with fibroids. feel free to share your story below.

DELAYED CORD CLAMPING

Have you heard of delayed cord clamping? During pregnancy, the umbilical cord is literally baby’s lifeline. The cord goes from baby to the attachment position of the placenta, carrying blood, nutrients, and oxygen from parent to child. It is made up of two arteries and one vein which are all surrounded by Wharton’s jelly. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Delayed cord clamping is simply the act of not clamping or cutting the umbilical cord until at least one full minute after giving birth (though most that choose to delay do so for at least 3-5 minutes). Some parents choose to delay cutting until after the placenta is delivered and the cord no longer pulsating (also referred to as a lotus birth)—allowing the entire delivery process to complete without interruption/intervention.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Why delay, you say? Those first few moments in the outside world are unlike anything your baby has ever experienced – it’s the first time they’ve ever had to breathe on their own. Nature’s response is to give your baby a final surge of extra blood from the placenta so that their little heart can direct 50% of its’ output to the lungs. This extra push helps their lungs to adjust.⁣⁣⁣

Because delaying the clamping of the cord allows more blood to transfer from the placenta to the infant, baby’s blood volume can increase by up to a third. The iron in the blood increases which is essential for healthy brain development. Some studies even show that a couple of extra minutes attached to the umbilical cord at birth may translate into a small boost in neurodevelopment several years later.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
While waiting for the cord blood + nutrients to pump through, its a perfect time for focus on skin to skin bonding (aka the golden hour) and for initiating breastfeeding.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
I encourage you to talk about delayed cord clamping with your doula, midwife, birth partner, and doctors so that you can make the right choice for your and your baby. Life happens and it’s not possible to do it in every circumstance, so know that immediate cord clamping is still safe for you + baby. ⁣

CLITORIS
Screen Shot 2020-04-13 at 1.01.56 AM.png

If you don’t have one, you know someone who does. Which of these #HumpDayAnatomy did you already know?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
- The clitoris is actually close to four inches in length (kinda like the average non-erect penis), but three-fourths of it is hidden from view within the female body⁣⁣
⁣⁣
- Anatomically, it’s sole purpose is pleasure, but endorphins released as a result of an orgasm can help to dilate the cervix in preparation for birth⁣⁣
⁣⁣
- Most womxn need clitoral stimulation to reach an orgasm⁣⁣
⁣⁣
- It grows through the female lifetime—increasing in size by almost 25% from puberty to menopause
